Dare to be great, Groveland!

Jennifer Moton

Dare to be great, Groveland! That is the challenge set by new City Manager, Redmond Jones II at a June Meet and Greet at the Marion Baysinger Memorial Library.  Groveland is a growing city with a 14% growth rate in 2013 compared to Clermont’s 7% growth rate. Expansion is clearly the future and achieving it smartly and efficiently is the goal. The City Manager’s vision includes focusing on corridors by maintaining luscious landscapes and also providing access to amenities.

The City Manager's background includes utilizing what a city already has to offer and capitalizing on its strengths. Mr. Jones mentioned that one of the strengths he sees in Groveland is agriculture. With that in mind he envisions developing Groveland into a destination city for current and future residents and businesses to complement Groveland. Future amenities include updating the police and fire departments with new squad cars and a fire truck. Plus, an increase in pay for Groveland’s finest. Mr. Jones mentioned that increase is important because those employees haven’t received any additional compensation for the past seven years.

On the financial side his goals include building the city’s reserves and making the city’s finances stronger, getting the city bonded so it can have access to more funding, which will help in receiving guidance, and keep the city on the straight and narrow with financial institutions. To help city residents stay up to date on day to day operations and upcoming plans, the new city website will be ready in November. These are just a few of the coming changes Mr. Jones mentioned. There were more exciting ideas, like bringing a bus route to Groveland, which is in the planning phase. These changes are exciting and it takes a unified community to achieve them.

As residents, your input and action matters. Here are a few things residents can do to help Groveland grow: become a Dare to be Great Volunteer and help the city get added to the Premier City List by researching what makes the city flourish and bringing those ideas back to the City of Groveland. Research the following cities: Sharon Massachusetts, Louisville Colorado, Vienna Virginia, and others. Remind Lake County that Groveland is growing, showing evidence of prosperity and that Groveland needs Lake County’s support, and attend City Council Meetings 1st and 3rd Monday of every month.

An exciting season has sprung in Groveland and time will tell once the city has met the City Manager’s challenge of greatness.
