Oldie but a Goodie

Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel
Crystal Osborne

The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel , the first book in the Earth’s Children series. It is  the dawn of modern humans when we meet Ayla. She is five years old and an earthquake orphans her. She wanders through the forest looking for people and has a run in with cave lion. She barely survives.

Luckily for Ayla the Clan, a group very different from Ayla’s people, are also looking for a new home after the earthquake destroyed their home. Iza, the Clan’s medicine woman comes across hurt Ayla. She takes her in.

As Ayla grows she learns their ways and Iza’a medicines most come to accept her, some love her. All but their leader to-be who sees her as a threat and grows to hate her. They struggle with each other for years until it all comes to an intense end.

The first time I became aware of this book was several years ago when a patron requested it. She told me that she reads it every few years because it is so good. I made note of the title and promptly forgot about the book. Everytime I would see the book I'd remember that patron. I would pick up the book read the synopsis and put it back on the shelf. I didn’t think I would get into the story. I was wrong.

When I drive, I listen to books on cd and am much more likely to give something a chance. I ordered a copy of Clan of the Cave Bear on cd. I was hooked from the first few minutes. I found myself taking the long way to places and driving a little slower just so I could listen to more of the story. Give the story a chance, it is soo worth it.
