Lake County to Dedicate Time Capsule for Viva Florida 500

The Lake County Library System is inviting residents to a time capsule dedication ceremony in commemoration of the statewide celebration of the 500-year anniversary of Florida’s discovery – Viva Florida 500. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 8 a.m. in the Lake County Administration Building, 315 W. Main St., Tavares.

The time capsule contains historic information and objects representative of current culture in Lake County. The contents are intended to be a snapshot for future residents to review the diverse and significant history of the community.

Items include memorabilia from the county’s award-winning 2nd Annual Wings and Wildflowers Festival, outstanding accomplishments of local legends, a list of Lake County’s pioneer families, the 1887 State Resolution establishing Lake County, a collection of milestone events from cities and a copy of the 2013 State of the County presentation.

The time capsule will be housed in a case in the wall of the rotunda in the Lake County Administration Building. The retrieval date is scheduled for 2037, which will be the commemoration of Lake County’s 150-year anniversary.

The time capsule dedication ceremony coincides with the opening of a historical exhibit, “The Story of Lake County,” also in the rotunda of the Lake County Administration Building. This inclusive display will follow the timeline of the county using items that best represent its remarkable history, furnished by the Lake County Historical Society. The display will be available for viewing Oct. 22 through January 2014. The viewing times are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except federal holidays.

“The time capsule, historic display and State of the County presentation provide a tremendous opportunity to review the remarkable progress of our county government and our community,” said Commissioner Leslie Campione.

The Florida Department of State is coordinating this statewide, year-long, multicultural commemoration, which is a unique chance to educate the world about Florida’s communities. The program is sponsored by the Lake County Historical Society, Lake County Cultural Affairs Council, Lake County Library System and the Lake County Board of County Commissioners.
