How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World

Howey's Summer Reading Program
Diane Merchant

The library in beautiful Howey-in-the-Hills, at 112 West Central Avenue, will host the 2011 Summer Reading Program, One World, Many Stories, from 2-3 p.m. every Friday afternoon in July. This is a free program open to all children aged six to twelve.

Our program features the book How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman. When an energetic little baker discovers that the market is closed, she travels the world to find the freshest ingredients for her apple pie. We will “travel” to five different countries to find the finest ingredients for our pie. Children will receive stamps on their passports for each country that they visit with us. In addition they will receive stamps on their passports for books that they read about our five countries, and they will receive stamps on their passports for completing worksheets correctly. The child with the most stamps on his/her passport will win this year’s grand prize. On the final day of our adventure, participants will make and enjoy a real apple pie!

Registration is not required. For additional information call the library at (352) 324-0254. The programs are free to the public. Call or visit the library web page for additional information on library programs and services.
