Genealogy After Hours

Carol Anderson

Six years ago, Friends of the Leesburg Public Library began sponsoring a special event focusing on genealogy. Genealogy After Hours quickly became very popular and now draws participants from all surrounding counties and as far away as Tampa. This year Genealogy After Hours will be held on Saturday, November 6th from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. For a donation of $10 to the Friends, participants receive a ticket for exclusive access to our featured speaker’s program, assistance from library staff and genealogical volunteers, and refreshments catered in the Florida Room by Chef Amanda Chiodo and her Mom, our very own Michelle Kauffman. Weather permitting, tables will also be set up on the terrace adjoining the Florida Room. All library computers and genealogical resources will be available, including databases such as Ancestry and Footnote, microfilm, CDs, and our print collection of over 5,000 volumes covering family histories, immigration and naturalization, Native American research, military records, all states, many foreign countries, heraldry, and more!

Participants receive a “goody bag” bearing the Friends’ logo on one side and Genealogy After Hours on the other. In the past, bags have contained pencils, pads, sample genealogy magazines, bibliographies, and various promotional flyers and bookmarks. This year our program will be presented by Dr. Debbie Duay, the current Lineage Research Chairman for the Florida State Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Dr. Duay is an experienced genealogy researcher and noted presenter. Her topic will be “Locating Your Revolutionary War Ancestor.”

In order for each participant to have a quality experience, this event is limited to 100 tickets. Sales begin on September 1st. By September 29th of this year, 34 tickets had already been sold. We anticipate another successful Genealogy After Hours, thanks to the sponsorship of our wonderful Friends of the Leesburg Public Library!

Tickets may be purchased at the Leesburg Public Library, 100 E. Main St., Leesburg, FL 34748, or ordered by mail by sending a check made out for $10 to the Friends of the Leesburg Public Library at the library’s address, attention Carol Anderson, and including a self-addressed stamped envelope. Please direct questions to Carol Anderson at 352-728-9790 or Carol.Anderson@leesburgflorida.gov
