Something New for the Adult Literacy Program

Erika L. Greene

We are so very excited to be launching a new series for our adult learners.  Obtaining a GED has become one of the most important literacy-related goals for many of the adult learners enrolled in the Lake County Library System Adult Literacy Program.  But it is not an easy goal for many of them.  We are pleased to work collaboratively with Lake Technical Center, the local GED preparation and test site.  We refer learners who are ready to prepare for the GED test to their classroom and lab and they refer individuals who are struggling with reading and writing skills or are not quite prepared for the classroom and lab environment.

As we see more adults enroll in the Adult Literacy Program requesting pre-GED tutoring we realized the need to create a formal series that would focus solely on pre-GED skills.  Initially, we will focus on the reading, writing, and math components of the GED - helping the adult learners strengthen their basic skills and improving their success when they transition to the Lake Tech GED classes.  We will provide training for the tutors who express an interest in joining this special series team and we will have materials, workbooks, and resources available to the tutors and learners!

We look forward to launching the new pre-GED component in May 2010.  It will be an amazing opportunity for both tutors and learners.
