Interested in becoming a tutor?
Training for those who are interested in becoming a Literacy Tutor will be conducted on September 16, 2013 in Tavares, Florida. This session will help new volunteer tutors learn how to coach adults in one-on-one and small group sessions on topics that include Basic English and Basic reading. Tutors are needed throughout the county!
The Lake County Adult Literacy Program is designed to serve adult learners who need help with reading, math and other English skills (conversation, reading, writing, and comprehension). In 2013 this program provided 7,423 volunteer tutor hours to more than 389 learners. The program is also expanding to include digital literacy topics.
This volunteer-based program offers one-to-one and small group tutoring to include conversation clubs, citizenship classes, reading clubs, and pre-GED language arts & math classes. Trained volunteer tutors and adult learners meet at the library and have access to student workbooks; adult literacy materials and other library resources. The adult learner and the tutor will work together to identify learning goals and set the pace to achieving them!
